Current Projects- Statuses and Plans

Hello, dear reader. I'm glad you're tolerating my sporadic posting, that's very good of you. You're as supportive an imaginary friend as I could ask for.

Projects

Thesis

So, the main thing I'm working on at the moment is my PhD thesis. I've made the unfortunate decision to agree to present on my research at the end of next week, so that's put a bit of extra pressure on me regarding this at the current moment.

Right now I have two papers written. These papers will end up comprising two chapters of my thesis. Where I am getting my degree requires three chapters, though I technically have four in the works.

The second chapter is what I'm currently working on, despite it being mostly done. The last bit is taking more time than I imagined it would - currently I'm doing a bit of a literature review on the material just to make sure I have up to date references and can tie my research together with the wider topic better.

Chapter 3 is mapped out and partially written, and Chapter 4 has a few sections written by other people - which is very handy.

I hope to have it all done this summer, but I have until the end of the year.

Sculpting

Current project is my 40k !GSC army - the Cheesestealer Cult.

These guys are almost completely done. I don't want to start anything else until I have them assembled, based, and painted up. It's been a long process, and there are a few models I haven't done yet (that might come much later down the road), but for the most part I have a functional army that I'm excited to get on the table.

I've also got a few classes I plan to take. There's one on character modeling I haven't finished up, but it really helped me with the initial phase of making characters using modeling instead of starting with sculpting. I know this isn't a huge thing to many, but I find it's made my sculpts a lot cleaner and faster. I'm not sure how much I'll continue with this one, as it's fairly long and the rest is pretty heavily based in a rigging workflow and aimed towards animation. I've been slowly developing a feel for the workflows that work best with my style, and while I appreciate the value of a more thorough rigging process, I don't know that I still find it quite as necessary especially when thinking of sculpts in terms of more modular design.

I've also got a class to do that's a bit more of an advanced course on anime-styled character modeling. I really need to take a long weekend and focus on this one, I'm excited for it but it's middling length and from what I've seen fairly complicated. This isn't really something I would've seen myself doing - I'm definitely not an anime or manga person, but the style is quite popular and you can do really cool things with it. At the very least, I'm sure some of the skills will be translatable to other processes.

So, that's what I'm up to. Oh, I also have a presentation to give tomorrow, so that's fun. I might just refresh one I gave a few years ago, and hope no one realizes it - it'll be useful for me to at least look back on that work before I have to write that chapter of my thesis, anyway.

Thanks for reading! Hope you have... a day. I'm not going to tell you how to go about your business. Be miserable if you feel like it, live your life how you want to.
